Kristen knew a breeder of Tarentaise growing up, HQ “Doc” Tucker. He was also a friend of the family and she often visited his veterinary office which had pictures of his Tarentaise on the wall from national shows and hearing him talk about his cattle were among the memories from her childhood. So when in 2023 she realized she was going to be able to make her dream came true, she started researching cattle breeds. These memories came to mind and prompted further research. After being refreshed on the breed characteristics, Tarentaise stood out above other breeds Kristen considered. Key factors that drew her were the dark markings leading to increased disease resistance, docility, adaptability to less ideal pasture, and the increased stocking rate compared to most of the British breeds. Mountain cows for a mountain farm seemed like a logical choice.
